Wichah Rer Mai Ork

Composing ends on 2 February 2015.
信不信由你 !

Wichah Rer Mai Ork by late Than Kong is the topic for today’s sharing but before explaining and sharing the topic in depth.  Let’s us begin with the brief information on geomancy skills and spells of Plot-selecting and House-building rites.  Most cultures in Asia have their own geomancy skills and spells. Malays culture House-building for instance is constructed according to Ilmu Tajul. Ilmu Tajul is actually alludes to a book entitled Tajuk Muluk. Tajul Muluk  is the most commonly used for the Malay system of geomancy, comprising metaphysical and geomantic principles considered when siting or designing buildings to improve and maintain well-being.

Tradition and culture played a major role in the building of a house. A monk, bomoh or shaman is engaged to survey the land and to select the most auspicious site for the house, and at the same time to pacify the spirits of the land with spiritual cleansing.

What is the connection between Tajul Muluk and Wichah Rer Mai Ork ? To be honest there is NO DIRECT CONNECTION or LINK between the Ilmu Tajul and Wichah Rer Mai Ork. The Ilmu Tajul is mentioned as some of the geomancy skill, ritual, knowledge and topics are coincidently interrelated.

Wichah Rer Mai Ork is a super rare and dying GEOMANCY SPELLS and SKILLS by late Than Kong. This dying geomancy spell was once used to determine the auspiciousness of a location and the best site for a house, premise or orchard. The history of this rare geomancy skill has never been revealed & documented; only Wat Uttamarams’ lineages and Bangseks’ old folks those days had a chance to witness the rare wichah done by our late Than Kong when he decided to build the Kuti and Ubosotd.

 Phor Mor Keaw said that before selecting and clearing the ground for the Ubosotd, Than Kong began the ritual by using the ARM-SPAN long ( SATU DEPA ) of live stick ( definitely not the dried stick ). Phor Mor Keaw mentioned that the live stick is used because it contains the complete elements of DIN NAM LOM FAI – ( Earth, Water, Wind, Fire ), as in 4 elements khata – Nak Mak Phak Thak. In Chinese these elements known as Gold, wood, water, fire earth. Whereas in Tajul Muluk these 4 elements are mentioned as 4 sumber alam - Tanah, Air, Angin, Api.

Before performing the Rer Mai Ork rituals, Than Kong will determine the auspicious day and date.  Than Kong then went to the nearby bushes to pick up the arm-span long live stick. There’re DOs and DONTs during the selecting and picking up the stick. For instances………
-> only can be done on the specific ( auspicious ) day and time.
-> the stick must leans to the East – Sun rises.
-> without any branches within the arm-span long.
-> without any thorns.
-> avoid the shadows ( trees or human ) to fall onto the selected tree.

Besides the DOs and DONTs there are specific mons / khatas to be recited before cutting the stick. The ANUYAK MON – seeking permission from Pu Reusri Roi Peth Ong ( 108 Hermits ) needed to be recited before cutting the stick, otherwise the rituals won’t work.

“Om
Pu Reusri Cau Jot,
Pu Reusri Cau Jar,
Warn Ni, Warn………
Phra Athit ………………..
…………………………….
…………………………….”
( incomplete verses, please do not recite ! )

 After selecting and measuring an arm-span long stick, Than Kong went to the selected area / plot and stood in the middle of the plot. Mor Keaw emphasised that, this ritual should be done in early morning - before the sun rises to avoid the shadow ( human’s shadow ) fall onto the plot. While standing and holding the stick, Than Kong recited the MAIN Rer Mai Ork Mon ( khata ) for this withi – ritual. The mon is as below …….

“Phuthang, Thammang, Sangkhang”

“…... Krit
 ….... Krit
 ….... Krit

Nak Mor Phut Thak Yak, Sik Thang,
 “Ak Aa, Ik Ie, Uk U
 Uk Uu, Dek Der, Rek Rer
 ……………………………..
 …………………................
 …………………………….”
( incomplete verses, please do not recite ! )

While reciting the mon, the stick was gripped horizontally ( using thumb and forefinger – both hands ), the mon will be recited according to the days of the week.

Monday          =           15
Tuesday          =            8
Wednesday    =          17
Thursday        =          14
Friday             =          21
Saturday        =          10
Sunday           =            6

While reciting the mons, the stick will be EXPANDED - dragged out ( both hands at the same time ) to the both ends of the stick repeatedly ( the act of expanding the stick from inside out ).

The stick then will be used as a measuring tool to measure the area – symbolic ( by placing the stick onto the ground ) The ritual and recitation of the incantations continued and the process of expanding the stick is repeated for 3 times. Lastly, the stick is then re-measured by using the spread arm / arm-span length.

The results of the ritual are as such…………

(a) Lengthened, the plot is auspicious.
(b) Shortened, the plot is very inuspicious.
(c ) Unchanged in length, the plot is inauspicious

 Whereas in Tajul Muluk, the dukun or bomoh begins smoking the area with incense (kemenyan). He then measures one depa ( arm-span ) of bamboo stick it in the ground together with a container of water.  Incense is burnt again as the dukun recites incantations. At dawn the next morning, the stick and water are checked. If the pail of water has spilled or the bamboo has shortened, the plot is inauspicious. If the water has overflowed or the stick has lengthened, it is very auspicious.  Another, perhaps older, method involves dreams. After clearing the area, the dukun lays four sticks in its centre and calls the name of the presiding local deities or spirits. Taking a handful of soil, he recites the following ayat-chants:
Hai anak Menteri Guru
 Yang duduk empat penjuru alam
Aku memohonkan tanah ini
Jikalau baik, tunjukkan alamat baik
Jikalau jahat, tunjukkan alamat jahat

Hai segala orang yang memegang tanah ini empat penjuru alam
Kama aku hendak berbuat rumah
Jikalau baik, tunjukkan alamat baik
Jikalau jahat, tunjukkan alamat jahat

Back to the Wichah Rer Mai Ork discussion………

Normally, if the plot is auspicious the stick will be lengthened / expanded for at least 1- 2 inches. Whereas is the plot is inauspicious the stick will be shorten for at least 1 – 2 inches or remain unchanged.

After the final ritual and measurement, the both ends of the stick will be hit repeatedly onto the ground before starting the THOILANG WITHI. It’s called as Thoilang @ REVERSE SPELL because the EXPENDED stick will be SHORTENED back to its original length – arm-span. ( only if the stick is expanded ).

The recitation of the incantations and the process of REVERSING to CONTRACT – to shorten the stick will be recited thrice and the stick will be CONTRACTED ( both hands at the same time ) from both ends of the stick repeatedly ( the act of contracting the stick from both ends - outside in ).

The both ends of the stick then will be hit repeatedly onto the ground and the stick then will be re-measured (arm-span length). As a result, the EXPANDED stick will be SHORTEN to the normal length. The stick then will be broke ( using bare hand ) into 4 pieces and tossed to the 4 directions – NEWS ( North East West and South ).

Once the site has been chosen / cleared, 4 holes at the 4 corners of the will be dug ( picture above ) in the ground. 4 takruts KARN BARN  ( Takrut to protect the house / premises ) will be placed and buried into the holes and mons will be recited ( wise clock direction - from A to A ). Each hole will be placed and buried with…………….
AMark Prue ( betel leaves ), Khao Tok ( popped rice ), Khao ( cooked rice ), Kai Khai ( kampong chicken egg), Yant Karn Barn ( rice paper yant ),  and Takrut Karn Barn ( rolled of copper takrut ), Thokh ( incense ) and Thian (white candle ).

B, C, & D – Takrut Karn Barn ( a copper takrut ),

While preparing, placing and burying the OFFERING, YANT and TAKRUT inside the 4 holes ( A to D) the mons / khatas are recited continuously. The Mons are………

( 1 )

“………… Tid Boon
 …………. Tid Ak Ker Ney
 …………. Tid Thak Sin
 …………. Tid Hun Rak Dee
 …………  Tid ……….
 …………  Tid ……….
 ………...  Tid ……….
 ………...  Tid ……….”
( Incomplete khatas, please do not recite !  )

( 2 )

 Hey ……….
 Jajok Male Tanoh,
 ……………………
 ……………………
 Hey..…….
 Jarok Semato,
 …………………….
 …………………….
 Aku Pasung 4 Aroh Mato Angin
 Pasung Dengan Berkat Doa
 …………………………………….”
 ( Incomplete Malay Ayat, please do not recite !  )

 At the final hole (A), THOKH and THIEN will be taken out from the hole. The rest of the offering will be buried and the thokh and thien will be placed onto the buried hole.

According to Phor Mor Keaw, if the plot is already built with house / premises the dug holes are not necessary. The yant and takrut can be placed / inserted at the 4 corners of the house. All of the offering do not need to be buried but will be left at the corner ( A ) for at least 7 days before removing it – the rice and chicken egg.

 Related story …………………..

There was a great story told by late Phor Mor Keaw and Phor Cau Nan on this super rare RER MAI OKH wichah by Than Kong. A Chinese man came and consulted Than Kong because of the family crisis – living in inharmonious. ( family members quarrelling, waken up in the middle of night and babies keep on crying at dawn ).

Than Kong said that it was something to do with the house and not the tenants but he needed to check the house before making any further comments. Than Kong went to their rented house and perform the Rer Mai Ork wichah. After performing the wichah, Than Kong went into a deep samdhi and touched the ground with the tip of his maikru. Than Kong said to the tenants, the plot is inauspicious.

The house was built onto the old graveyard and in order to overcome the problem they needed to perform a cleansing ritual or just vacant the house. They chose to vacant their rented house and moved to another house. Before leaving the house, Than Kong prepared the Namboon Phra Thoraneesarn and Namboon Khan Barn to the tenants. A pail of river water was requested by Than Kong to be made a namboon. The namboon was then sprinkled and splashed the house and area for cleansing & purifying purposes. Than Kong said to the tenants, they dun hafta to move out as he already cleansed the house / plot.
The example of the khata Namboon Phra Thoraneesarn used by Than Kong ……….

“Om Chadsuk Tharuk Bailarn,
 Phra Thoraneesarn,
 ……………………………..
 ……………………………..
 …………………………….
 ……………………………..
 ……………………………..
 Khor ………………………
 Pai Dui Nam Kap Lom.”
 ( Incomplete khatas, please do not recite !  )

 The example of the khata to purify the haunted / in auspicious plot used by Than Kong ……….

 “Om Pu Jau Sarming Prai,
 Nang Wu,
 Nang Kwai,
 Nang……..,
 Nang…….,
